More than $77,000 grant to help battle crime

A grant will help law enforcement battle crime in Reading and Berks County.

U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that Reading will receive $77,314 from the Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program program.

“This grant will help the law enforcement officers of Reading and Berks County combat crime and keep the city and county residents safe,” Senator Casey said. “Police officers and first responders in the region are working hard to fight crime, and these funds will bolster that effort.”

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance GrantsProgram can be used for a variety of efforts such as hiring law enforcement officers; supporting drug and gang task forces; funding crime prevention and domestic violence programs; and supporting courts, corrections, treatment, and justice information-sharing initiatives. Specifically, this grant will be used to maintain adequate police staffing levels, investigate and prevent crimes, and fund a task force to investigate crashes within the city of Reading and Berks County.
