Construction on a new Giant grocery store in Maxatawny is nearing completion.
Maxatawny Township Supervisors are anxiously awaiting for the new store’s opening in April, according to Township Manager Justin Yaich.
“It’s adding to the tax base. It’s providing competition in the township which usually results in better prices for the customer,” said Yaich.
Giant will also be the largest sewer system customer for the township at this time, Yaich said, contributing toward the new sewer plant’s maintenance and operation costs and help reduce debt.
Construction began in late June and, “If all goes as planned, we hope to open by April 2013,” said Chris Brand, Public and Community Relations Manager, of Giant Food Stores, LLC.
The store is located at Maxatawny Market Place, a new shopping center in development, on the corner of Kutztown and Sharadin roads in Maxatawny.
The approximately 50,000-square-foot grocery store features an “innovative store layout, a vibrant décor package, our popular fresh perishable departments, and many unique amenities to be disclosed later,” said Brand.
“We brought this store format to the Mount Joy community in 2011, and we have received enthusiastic responses from our customers,” he said.
Giant anticipates hiring about 150 full and part-time associates with a focus on hiring locally, he said.
“This new store and fuel station will introduce our unique proposition of quality, selection, and savings to new customers,” said Brand. “We are always looking for opportunities to grow our existing business and to serve new communities. Many in the Kutztown community are aware of the Giant brand and how we find ways to save our customers both time and money. We look forward to contributing to the vibrant Kutztown community.”
