Kutztown
Girls’ Basketball
The Kutztown High School girls’ basketball team played host to the Kutztown Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28. The Lady Cougars lost both games and finished in fourth place. The Lady Cougars are 1-9 overall this season.
Kutztown opened the tournament against Susquenita. The Blackhawks outscored the Cougars in all four quarters and won the game, 60-39.
Susquenita took a 12-9 lead into the second quarter, then increased the lead to 13 by halftime, 34-21. They slowly pulled away in the second half, outscoring Kutztown in the third quarter, 14-11, and the fourth, 12-7.
Hannah Bankes had a big game for the Cougars, scoring 21 points, including three three-point buckets. Amy Neumann netted nine points and Rachel Fegely had four.
The loss sent the Cougars to the consolation round the next night, where they took on Brandywine Heights, which was beaten by Conrad Weiser in the first round. The Cougars stayed right with the Bullets in the first quarter, but Brandywine took over after that and defeated Kutztown, 63-42.
The game was tied at 11-11 after one quarter, but Brandywine outscored Kutztown in the second quarter, 21-13, and the third, 14-7, to open up a 46-31 lead.
Bankes had another good offensive game, scoring 19 points. Kennedy Miller scored six points while Amy Mucelli scored four and Newmann contributed three.
Fleetwood
Boys’ Basketball
The Fleetwood High School boys’ basketball team played host at the Tiger Classic held Dec. 27 and 28 in Fleetwood. The Tigers captured second place in the tournament after winning their first game and losing to Pequa Valley in the championship game. Fleetwood is 3-5 overall this season.
In the opening round, the Tigers played host to Palisades. Thanks to a bit fourth quarter scoring burst, Fleetwood was able to defeat Palisades, 57-49.
Palisades held a 24-21 halftime lead, then extended the lead to seven heading into the fourth quarter. But Fletwood turned things around in the final period, outscoring their guests, 20-5 to earn the victory.
The Fleetwood offense was led by Clay Weidemoyer who scored 22 points in the contest. Jeff Estima netted 11 points while Kyle Flannery scored nine and Brian Schumacher added seven.
The victory sent Fleetwood to the championship game the following night where they took on Pequea Valley. This was a defensive struggled down to the end but it was Pequea Valley that came out on top, 35-33.
Fleetwood held a 5-2 lead after one quarter, and still led by three at halftime, 20-17. The two teams battled tooth and nail the rest of the way but the Tigers couldn’t come out on top.
Estima and Weidemoyer led the Fleetwood offense with eight points apiece. Schumacher netted five points while Ryan Steward, Jared Reaser and Weston Hawkins all scored three.
Estima and Weidemoyer were both named to the All-Tournament team.
Girls’ Basketball
The Fleetwood High School girls’ basketball team participated in the Salisbury Tournament. With victories over Catasauqua and Salisbury, the Lady Tigers won the tournament championship. Fleetwood has a 6-2 record overall this season.
The Lady Tigers opened the tournament on Dec. 27 against Catasauqua. After shutting out Catasauqua in the first quarter, Fleetwood went on to a relatively easy 48-14 victory.
The Lady Tigers took a 16-0 lead into the second quarter, then increased the advantage to 22 by halftime, 27-5. They put the game away in the third quarter when they outscored their opponent, 13-3.
Maureen McGarry led the Fleetwood offense with 13 points in the contest. Cyre Virgo chipped in with eight points while Madison Bossler added six and Xiomara Toledo had five.
The victory sent the Lady Tigers to the tournament’s championship game Dec. 28 against Salisbury. This was a close one throughout, but Fleetwood used a strong second quarter to win the game and the tournament title, 47-41.
After leading by two heading into the second quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Salisbury in that second quarter, 17-9. Salisbury fought back in the third quarter to keep it close, but Fleetwood was able to hold them off.
McGarry led the Lady Tigers once again with 13 points in the game, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Kendra Bamburger scored 11 points while Toledo and Virgo each scored eight. Bossler chipped in with seven points.
Brandywine Heights
Boys’ Basketball
The Brandywine Height High School boys’ basketball team participated in the Tiger Classic held Dec. 27 and 28 in Fleetwood. The Bullets lost both games in the tournament which resulted in a fourth place finish.
Brandywine Heights opened the tournament with a game against Pequea Valley. The Bullets took the game into overtime, but it was Pequea Valley that came out on top, 55-53.
The Bullets jumped out to a 13-9 lead after one quarter, but Pequa Valley came back in the second quarter to take a 25-20 halftime lead. Brandywine came back to tie the game after regulation, 48-48.
Matt Boyer led the Brandywine offense with 15 points in the game. Sean Ziegler scored 14 points and Alex Hess netted 11 while Tanner Rankin contributed with six.
The loss sent the Bullets to the consolation game on Dec. 28 where they took on Palasades. The game was close in the first half, but Palisades pulled away in the second half for a 61-36 victory over the locals.
Palisades held a 20-13 halftime lead, but outscored the Bullets in the third quarter, 23-16, and the fourth, 18-7.
Boyer led the Bullets in scoring once again with nine points in the contest. Hess netted eight points while Rankin had six and Jake DeLong added five.
Girls’ Basketball
The Brandywine Heights High School girls’ basketball team participated in the Kutztown Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28. The Lady Bullets captured third place in the tournament after losing the first game, but come back to win the consolation round game. The Lady Bullets are 5-4 overall this season.
In the opening round, the Lady Bullets took on Conrad Weiser. A big fourth quarter helped the Scouts to a victory over Brandywine, 48-41. Conrad Weiser jumped out to a 21-12 lead after one quarter, but Brandywine Heights cut the lead to four by halftime, then took a 33-32 lead after three quarters. But Conrad Weiser took over in the fourth quarter, outscoring Brandywine, 16-8.
Lizzy Leiby led the Brandywine offense with 14 points in the game, while Deanna Dadonna scored a pair of three-point baskets and finished with 11 points. Emily VanBilliard added six points.

Meagan Loos paced the Brandywine Heights offense with 16 points in the game, while Daddona, VanBilliard and Jennifer Seabourne each scored 12 points. Ashley Smith netted nine.
Wrestling
The Brandywine Heights wreslting team competed in the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament Dec. 28 in Shillington. The Bullets, led by gold medalists Adam Mackie (182) and Peter Renda (170), finished in sixth place.
Hunter Gimbor (106) finished in second place while Dan Schmeck (126) was eighth.
Mackie began the tournament by pinning Jordan Spahr of Lampeter-Strausburg in the first round in 59 seconds. In the quarterfinals, he decisioned Tommy Bennett of Hempfield, 8-1, then won by a technical vall over Kyle Narber of Wyomissing, 15-0.
In the championship match, Mackie decisioned Marcus Johnson of Governor Mifflin, 8-2.
Renda began his tournament by pinning Mason Miller of Lampeter-Strasburg in 1:05 of the first round. In the quarterfinals, Renda won by a technical fall over Racqwan Maxwell of Upper Darby, 18-3, then pinned Anbonia Bennett of Middletown in 2:29 of their semifinal match.
In the championship match, Renda won a 7-2 decision over Ben Swarr of Garden Spot.
Gimbor pinned John Garcia of Muhlenberg in 1:36 of his first round bout, then decisioned Anthony Petril of Upper Darby in the quarterfinals, 3-2. In the semifinals, Gimbor won a 5-2 decision over Brandon Rodriguez of Dover. But in his championship bout, he lost a 5-3 deicision ty Tyshawn White of Bishop McDevitt.
